distinguishing features. his smile, which is toothy and white, is probably luke's most distinguishing feature. his second most notable feature would be his smug expression, which hardly ever leaves his face.
play-by. matthew gray gubler.
/ so i'm moving to new york
loves. films of all kinds, sixties music, jimi hendrix, eighties movies, john hughes (may he rest in peace!), mind altering substances, fine things, fine women, fine wine, fine cigars, fine alcohol (or any alcohol), fine food, junk food, strobe lights, rave parties, parties in general, the idea of rastafarianism, telling people he will "pencil them in" to his schedule, childish things like action figures, sonic the hedgehog, sega games, old playstation games, his hedgehog sonic, any version of call of duty or modern warfare.
hates. waking up early, hangovers, the after taste of alcohol, menthol cigarettes, having to be serious about anything except work, talking to his family, staying in one place for too long, women who tease, jailbait, women who have to talk about their feelings, at&t service, running out of battery on a phone or a camera, forgetting to charge something overnight, having to cook.
quirks. luke will not ride in elevators. he refuses--what if he gets stuck? he prefers the stairs, which may be one of the reasons he has kept so fit over the years. the smell of gasoline does not bother him. in fact, he rather likes it. of course, it isn't exactly his cologne of choice, but he doesn't understand why people complain when they smell gasoline. when he's nervous or embarrassed, his ears turn a bright pink color. he can't help it, and you can always tell when luke has been embarrassed.
aspirations. he hopes to one day become a big time director slash producer, with at least one grammy under his belt. he aspires to be alive when marijuana is made legal, and he also hopes to develop glaucoma so he can smoke it with a prescription.
secrets. he hasn't spoken to his family in a little over two years and refuses to visit them. he also hasn't had a steady girlfriend since his junior year in high school.
personality evaltuated.
luke could best be described as childish. he enjoys all things from his childhood, from things like nintendo 64 to lincoln logs. he doesn't tell a lot of people, but he has a room in his small apartment full of his old things that he will occasionally pull out of boredom. many boring tuesday afternoons will find him in his living room, building a city out of legos and listening to nirvana or garbage. aside from his love of toys, he is also quite like a child in the way that he will pout if he doesn't get his way. he wants what he wants and by god, he will get it. he can be quite persuasive, and he tends to get his way. by the same point, he also has quite a short attention span and loses interest in things very quickly, unless the grab his attention. this might be part of the reason he can't hold down a relationship--he simply gets bored.
luke is not the type of person to talk about his feelings. he would rather clean an oven or help a woman shoes than talk about his feelings. in his book, feelings don't matter. he isn't looking for anything serious from anyone, and all that matters is that he's having a good time. if he's having fun, then what's the point of discussing how he feels? he is closed off and reserved from the rest of the world when it comes to problems, because he refuses to be the person who whines and complains about his life instead of acting to change it. somewhere deep down in his subconscious, he is afraid of his own feelings and the way that they make him...well, feel. where did feeling ever get anyone? nowhere. so luke prefers to focus on having a good time.
i mentioned his lack of attention span and quick-to-dwindle interest in just about anything. but when it comes to what luke loves, he is passionate. film directing is what he enjoys doing and if he could marry it, he probably would. if film directing would be the mother of his children, then he would have it happen. he is hard working and dedicated when it comes to work and sometimes likes to work overtime to make sure everything is perfect. the same goes for people. his friends are his family, and he is loyal. he believes in the phrase "true till death" and holds to that always. if he can't trust his friends, then who can he trust? he tends to have trust issues at first and does not like to let people in to his personal life, but instead view his exterior. but once you get luke by himself and comfortable, he's a hell of a lot of fun. once you're a part of the "inner circle," you've got a friend in luke. need someone to pick you up in the middle of the night on the side of the road? luke would be happy to help. need someone to bail your drunk ass out of jail after a crazy night of partying? luke is your man.

history evaluated.
Elena and Emilio met as many people did--unexpectedly and with absolutely no knowledge that they would one day marry and have a beautiful baby boy. But when they did meet, they realized they were quite smitten and began seeing each other regularly. At the time, both lived in America, Emilio's parents having left Spain many years prior and Elena's parents being natives of Burlington, New Jersey. The two were inseparable and soon found themselves married and looking to start a family of their own. After a few tries, Elena announced that she was pregnant, and nine months later she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. They named him Luka after Elena's grandfather and Francesco after Emilio's father. Everything was picture perfect for the Garzas. They lived in central New Jersey for a few years, showering Luke with love and affection. Emilio often surprised Elena with gifts and Elena made sure there was food on the table for her husband every night he got home. It was a picture perfect family, picture perfect life, picture perfect dynamic.
But as they say, all good things must come to an end. One morning before Elena saw Luke off to kindergarten with a kiss, a lunchbox full of nutritious food and encouraging words, Luke overheard his parents talking about something. It sounded serious, because neither of them were laughing and they seemed to be whispering. We can't ignore this anymore, Elena. his father had said. Luke will be fine with his grandmother. They went on to talk about something called "chemo" that sounded intimidating. Luke had no idea that his mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer, or that they were planning to send him to his grandmother's home in New York, or that everything Luke ever knew was about to change. When Luke got home from school that day, Elena and Emilio told him that he was going to "stay with his abuela for a little while." It sounded like fun at first, because he would get to see his family. But Luke didn't realize just how serious the situation was.
A couple months later, when Luke was settled in and registered at the pre-school in New York, he was pretty happy. His first day of school had him nervous and gave him the jitters. He woke and got himself ready. When he went to the door to walk to the bus, he turned around to face his grandmother. Looking up expectantly for a kiss or a hug or even a smile, Luke waited for his grandmother to acknowledge him in some way, encourage him. The woman looked out over her glasses and nodded at him. Have a good day, she'd said, rather dryly. Then, she turned around and walked back into the house. Many mornings began like this, and many nights ended the same way.
For the next couple years, Elena battled cancer. She entered chemotherapy treatment, which made her very weak and her long, black hair fell out. She was often pale and sickly, confined to her bed. Emilio worked harder than ever to pay for the bills that were adding up, and Elena fought for her life. Finally, when Luke was eight, three years after her diagnosis, the doctor announced that Elena had won her battle with cancer and the tumor was completely removed. The Garzas were ecstatic--Elena had won, Emilio would have his wife back and most importantly, they would be able to bring their son back home with them. They would finally be able to be a family again, as they once had been.
A few weeks after the doctor had announced Elena's victory over cancer, they brought Luke home. He looked much older, more mature and he'd gone through a growth spurt. Of course, the parents and Luke had kept in touch while he was away, but they thought it best that he wasn't around Elena while she found cancer. So now that everything was back to normal, they could continue living their lives. Luke's first day back to his old school was just a short week after he returned. Luke readied himself, dressed himself, ate his breakfast and packed his lunch. His mother walked him to the door and as she opened her mouth to speak, to tell him how much she loved him and how much she had missed him, and how she was glad they could be a family again, Luke walked away. And he didn't stop to look back.
Years and years went by since that day, and Luke is still the distant and unfeeling person that he was then. But once Luke finished high school he realized that he would have to find something to do with the rest of his life. And he had no idea what he wanted to do. One afternoon, his friends asked him to record a song they were playing on his mother's old camcorder. As he held the camera in his hands, it felt like a piece of him that had been missing for years was replaced. He played with angles and lighting and different shots and filters and realized that he wanted to produce, direct. He wanted to be the man behind the camera calling the shots, putting his vision onto a big screen and watching people watch what he made and adore it. So naturally, when he finished high school, he moved straight to Hollywood to get going. At first, it was slow work. He would work as a crew member, setting up a microphone here and there. Or he would be the set janitor, making sure everything was neat and in its place. Year by year, he moved his way up the ladder, eventually reaching the title of cinematographer. Next stop, the credits of a movie reading, "Written, directed, and produced by Luke Garza."

A good party was one where Elodie or Kale was present. A great party was one where Elodie and Kale were both present. But a wild party was one where Elodie and Kale were there together, doing only God knows what. The two had been known to cause trouble and do things that people talked about for weeks afterwards. Tonight at the New Year's party, they'd done just about everything they could to cause a riot. They'd sat in the hot tub, entertaining their friends and classmates with intense games of truth or dare (but mostly dare). They'd gone in the pool and played chicken and other physical contact games. They'd even stolen a few people's swimming trunks and untied a few bathing suit tops--or at least, Elodie had. There was really no way to keep her under wraps at a party like this and she was having a great time. Some wise crack who became Elodie's friend that night had brought alcohol in cleverly disguised Gatorade bottles, telling the headmaster that they contained energy drinks so no one would fall asleep before the new year. Luckily, the entire staff bought the story and Elodie was currently pumping rum and coke through her system, out on the dance floor with Kale. Whoever thought to have a dance floor at a party like this was a complete genius and Elodie wanted to give that person a pat on the back and a congratulations. No party was complete without dancing, and Elodie stood in front of Kale, one arm wrapped around his neck and the other in the air. If you asked Elodie, the best part of this whole thing was that everyone was in their bathing suits. Both she and Kale were nearly naked, wet with chlorine water. If that wasn't every guy's fantasy, she didn't know what was.
As she danced with Kale, or rather on Kale, Elodie sang along with the music playing, though her voice was drowned out by the volume. There was no place like a good party, and it might have been the alcohol, but she was sure this was the best party she'd ever been to. That she could remember, anyway. After all, weren't the best and craziest parties the ones you couldn't remember? Elodie wondered what she was going to remember in the morning. The outrageous dares she'd done, the many people she'd danced with and all the physical contact she'd received this evening. Elodie was a physical person, if it wasn't blatantly obvious already. She was the kind of person who touched others as she spoke to them, liked having other people put their arms around her, loved it when people held onto her for no reason, and had to have some kind of contact when in close vacinity to others. Kale didn't seem to mind touch either, because he wasn't pulling away and he wasn't complaining about it. And Elodie had a hunch that he was probably enjoying it just as much--if not more--than she was.
As the song ended, Elodie turned around and wrapped both arms around Kale's neck, pressing her body to his. It wasn't cold, but she liked to think they were conserving body heat in the winter time. Dragging her lips down his neck, she let out a giggle. It was obvious that there was some alcohol running through her veins, and the headmaster and the other staff sitting in the bleachers tensed up a bit as they watched the scene below. Not like they could do anything about it anyway. Teenagers were going to do what they wanted, and Elodie didn't care what the staff thought, or even what her classmates thought. She didn't pay attention to the pairs of eyes that wandered, staring at them and whispering about what they must be up to and what they'd be doing later. Again, maybe it was just the alcohol, but none of these things occurred to Elodie. In fact, she would rather let them stare. They knew who she was, and they knew the kinds of things she did and a lot of girls would have liked to be her right at that moment. And perhaps a lot of guys would also have liked to be Kale then too, because they did make quite an attractive pair. The only thing on Elodie's mind at that point was this--what other kinds of trouble could they cause in one night?
