lucie didn't usually bother going places unless she had someone to go with, but today was different. the sun was shining, it was beautiful outside. everything looked so vibrant, and it gave lucie a certain jolt of adrenaline and energy to see everything else so...alive. but of course, lying in the sun always did make her a little bit sleepy, too. she'd decided to venture out to santa monica beach and lay out for a while.

why would she want to just lie around on a beautiful day like this? well, firstly she needed a tan. the winter had found lucie inside her condo, in sweaters and robes. the sun had been peeking around a couple of clouds all season but lucie never saw the point of sunbathing in the wintertime. now that it was finally summer, lucie could put on a bathing suit and enjoy the sun and the weather. she also enjoyed lying around at the beach to people-watch. the different people she saw at the beach were so interesting in their own ways--she saw a young family walking by, and lucie smiled. a young mother, no older than 25 and her husband or boyfriend, and their small child, walked by, laughing as the little girl enjoyed the sand and the water lapping at her feet. if that wasn't sweet, lucie didn't know what was.

contemplating going in the water, lucie lie on her beach towel with a smile on her face. it was hard not to smile in this kind of weather. for lucie, anyway. when the sun was shining, so was she. this was her favorite kind of down time--lying in the sun, looking as people walked by, listening to the sound of the waves breaking and lapping the shore. it was such a shame for anyone to miss out on this that she almost regretted not bringing someone with her to enjoy it. almost, but not quite.

This was the life. Living in Santa Monica, California and able to see the ocean from your bedroom window. He picked an ideal location, it wasn't close enough to the beach or the pier for him to be bothered by tourist and their noise. Rob lived in an apartment in Princeton St, which was around the corner from a small Irish pub and nearby Douglas Park, so he could take his little dog Pingu for a quick walk every morning and night, and nip out for a couple of beers too. He lived about twenty to thirty minutes from Los Angeles and about ten minutes from Santa Monica's beach and pier. Rob liked to keep fit, the majority of his roles demanded him to stay in shape but he also did because he didn't want to get sloppy.

Rob was dressed in a pair of Nike shorts and a plain navy tee shirt, with a pair on Nike trainers on his feet which pounded hard on the pavement as he took it nice and steady, weaving in and out of any people or obstructions on the path. He could see and smell the Pacific Ocean as he jogged, his freckled and wrinkled forehead becoming decorated with little beads of sweat, his gingery brown hair began to glisten slightly near his hairline. It was purely by chance that he spotted Lucie on the beach. He actually ran past her, then looked back to the figure laying down on her towel and he paused, before jogging backwards as if he had just been rewound.

"Y'alright?" he said, trying not to sound breathless as he playfully mimicked a Liverpudlian accent as a joke after something she had said to him a few days ago. It was unnatural to hear the accent in Rob's voice, simply because he had to go at a higher pitch to his normal voice. Him and his mates used to rip the shit out of the Liverpudlian soldier they had who was affectionately called Scouse, just like the gypsy soldier was referred to lovingly as Pikey, even though it was a derogatory slur. They'd all don the high voices and start going off with "Eh, eh, eh? Calm down, calm down. Dey do do dat dough don't dey dough?" to take the piss. And Scouse would give it back as good as he got it, all in good fun.

lucie loved new york. it was busy, it was beautiful (if you could get past the grimy buildings and the cloud of smog covering the city), and it was a big place for lucie's big dreams. she hated to leave but los angeles was equally spectacular. the beaches were lovely, the weather was always temperate, and it was still big enough to house her aspirations. she didn't live terribly close to the beach, but she was close enough to visit it on a regular basis and now that it was summer, she would be visiting a lot more often.

as she lie on the towel, she saw a navy colored figure moving towards her...backwards. she sat up and cocked her head to the side in a confused way. she didn't recognize the figure at first because well, it was moving backwards. when she realized it was rob and he addressed her in a fake liverpudlian accent, lucie let out a giggle. "oh yeah, i'm just peachy," lucie said, putting on a heavy new york accent to go along with the joke. it was nice to see him on such a beautiful day. good company on a good day. not something she could complain about.

lucie had already shed her t-shirt and shorts and was now sporting her bikini and flip flops. she didn't feel uncomfortable or self-conscious in front of him, as she would in front of most other guys, but instead felt at ease. it was a nice feeling. "so, we're at the beach," she pointed out. "are you up for a swim?"

[/color] lucie was getting a bit warm and was ready to hit the waves, even if only for a splash. now that rob was here, she could enjoy the water with someone else.

Rob flashed a grin down at the scantily-clad friend of his when she responded in a thicker New York accent than her usual one. They were such dorks. Rob placed his hands on his hips, taking a deep breath and exhaling out slowly. His heart had been pounding violently, so hard that he felt like he could hear and feel it in his ears. But it was slowing down quickly. "Good." he answered, running his hand over his bearded mouth and jaw area, uncapping the bottle of water he had to take a drink. And as he drank that water, Lucie mentioned a different kind of water. He turned, looking over his shoulder at the glistening sea.

Well why not? It wasn't like he had anywhere to be, he was just going to go home and shower. "Are we? I'd never have guessed!" he teased, and shrugged his shoulders. "Aye, go on then." he said and began to nudge his foot out of his Nike running shoe, whipping off his socks afterwards. He would probably be the most pasty person on the beach, bless him. He couldn't help it, he was a pale guy. He was covered in freckles, most women didn't find that sort of body attractive. Even if it was in an great, athletic shape. Well, we can't all be smooth tanned skinned six pack wielding hotties now, could we?

rolling her blue eyes and laughing, lucie placed her hands on her hips too. "none of your cheeky behavior, rob,"

[/color] she told him. now, normally lucie went for your stereotypical hotties. babes with chiseled bodies, tanned and seemingly perpetually oiled skin. rob didn't exactly fit that criteria. but it was okay, because for some reason, rob was strangely attractive. he didn't need those things, because lucie felt a certain amount of attraction to him anyway.

once rob was sufficiently dressed (or undressed) to go into the water, lucie let a smile spread across her lips and she grabbed his hand, running towards the water. when they finally reached it, lucie took a deep breath and dove into an oncoming wave. it was cold and refreshing, and lucie was immediately glad she'd suggested this. coming back up for air, lucie looked around for rob.

"it's a beautiful day,"[/color] she said, pointing out the obvious again. relaxing into the water and backstroking around him, she let out a sigh. "what would make you want to go for a run on such a great day? why weren't you on the beach yourself?"[/b]

He gave Lucie a look that a mischievous look. They were often cheeky with each other, being playful and teasing each other like any good set of friends would do. There was only a five year difference between them but Lucie and Rob's personalities couldn't be more different in some aspects. She was a party girl, she liked to get wild. Rob liked to chill out. Didn't mean they couldn't have fun together though, it certainly didn't hinder their blossoming friendship. Their differences were what made this friendship interesting. Rob removed his shirt shortly before she took his hand and together they manoeuvred to the water. Oh it felt good on his skin. It was refreshing but you could still feel a warmth about it because the sun had been heating it up.

While Lucie dived in, Rob simply waded in after her, his sports shorts now sticking to his skin along with his boxers. Ack, wet boxers up the arse was one of the most uncomfortable things. "Dunno, it's just what I do I guess. Part of my routine, gotta stay in shape now, ain't I?" he said, patting his stomach and smiling somewhat sheepishly. He flicked water at her as she swam around him before sinking into the water so it hovered at his shoulders. "Besides, I'm not what you'd call a...beachy person?" he said, rolling his eyes. He had tan lines on his arms but his body was pretty lightly toned where he had been in the sun wearing tee shirts. Thankfully, it wasn't an awkward skin tone difference!

it was nice to have someone like rob around--someone who was just a friend. not someone who immediately wanted to jump her bones or go to a party with her. granted, a lot of her relationships were based on those two things but it was refreshing to have rob around to just relax with. to have fun with. they had genuine fun together, and they had a real friendship (or the beginnings of one). while this was all great and it truly did make lucie happy, it was a little intimidating too. it was so different from what she was used to and she was hoping she wouldn't screw it up.

lucie watched as he patted his stomach, and laughed as he splashed water at her. that's okay, she told him, patting him on the shoulder. we can't all be beachy people. luckily for you, i happen to be perfectly beachy. standing up again, lucie walked out further into the water. have you ever body surfed? she asked, watching as the waves picked her up and pulled her back down, up and down, up and down. the rocking of the ocean was rhythmic and relaxing and she was glad she'd chosen to come here today, and even more glad that she had rob here to spend time with.

"I can tell." said Rob, watching her walk further into the water. She seemed very at home at the beach, in the sea. Especially for a city girl. He didn't have beaches like this back home in England, you had to travel to somewhere like Cornwall or Wales for anything like the beaches of California. Which he didn’t do often. Bodysurfing sounded interesting, he'd never even heard of the activity, never mind partake in it! "I don't even know how one would bodysurf. So I haven't, no." he said, with a hint of a chuckle because bodysurfing sounded funny. He assumed it was exactly what the title said, surfing with your body only, rather than with a board. Which sounded a bit terrifying it this were a beach with a roaring pipeline to surf through. Doing that with no board? I don't think so! He had been surfing though, well, a friend had taken him out a few times so Rob could get the hang of it. But apparently, Rob ought to stick to rugby.

lucie hadn't been living in los angeles for very long and she'd come straight from new york city, where a beach was hard to come by. but deep down somewhere lucie knew she was a beachy type person and felt right at home in the waves. it was a calming place, when the rest of your life was chaos. it was a force bigger than herself that she could physically touch and feel and let overpower her. it was almost like a religious thing--something bigger than her that she could see, and feel, and believe in.

smiling as she looked back at rob, lucie motioned for him to join her further in the water. turning away from the shore, lucie began to demonstrate. "okay,"

[/color] she began, watching the waves as they passed. "you wait for a good wave, one that looks like it's going to break right after it goes by."[/color] a couple of choppy waves passed while lucie kept her eyes focused on the vast ocean. "then, when you get a good one, you turn around and lay completely flat in the water and ride it like a surfboard."[/color]

seeing a good wave coming up, and watching it about to crest, lucie followed it and thrust herself forward into the water, keeping her body straight and riding the wave face down. when she came back up, she was nearly back to the shore. "like that!"[/color] she said triumphantly.

This was going to be a disaster, he could just feel it in his bones. It all sounded simple enough but it was probably going to take him a few goes. Maybe a lot more than a few. When beckoned, he moved towards her because she was his teacher right now and you did your teacher told you to fucking do! His hands on his hips, he watched his buddy prepare to jump on this bitch. He half expected it to fail but she made it! And he cheered, like a loser. But it looked fun! How had he never heard of his before? "I'm never gonna be able to do that!" he shouted pessimistically to Lucie, who had been taken away by the wave. "If I drown, missus..." Rob said, pointing his finger warningly at her.

Fuck that, he survived doing one of the most dangerous of jobs in one of the most dangerous places on earth. It wasn't happening. NOT TODAY MY FRIEND, not today.

He waited for a wave. He probably should have waited for a different one, but the reasoning behind him failing at this was just Rob and not the wave quality. He was under that water within the first few seconds. Took him a moment to gather his senses since he was upside down and all over the place in the water. His feet finding the floor, he no longer felt disorientated and was now sopping wet from head to toe, his thick gingery brown hair now speckled with droplets of water. And he gazed at his friend with a humorous dead pan expression, shaking his head, with water dribbling down his nose and off the tip.

lucie brushed the long, blonde hair that was currently sticking to her face out of the way and watched rob as he doubted himself. crossing her arms across her chest, she rolled her eyes and smiled. "if you drown, i'll pay for your funeral,"

[/color] she promised. lucie knew that he would get on with it, though because rob had been in the army. he'd been deployed, and he'd faced worse things than body surfing. this was nothing compared to what he'd faced in the military and she was about to tell him to suck it up (in the most loving way possible, of course) before he braced himself and threw his body into the water.

he wasn't very good at it, at first. but that was to be expected--it wasn't something that was easy to catch onto the first time round. you had to figure out what worked for you, where you fit in the wave and how to hold your body. there was no shame in failing the first couple of times...but it was pretty funny. rob came back to the surface with a blank expression on his face. laughing with delight, lucie clapped her hands in rob's direction. "not bad for your first time!"[/color] she applauded, not entirely lying to him. "it gets easier, i promise."[/color] walking further out to sea, lucie motioned to rob for him to follow her. he would get the hang of it, eventually. "ready for another try?"[/color] she said to her waterlogged friend.

Oh that was nice, thinking positive and all that! He'd thought about his funeral plenty in the past and it was not happening after today, damn it! He shook his head a little bit as Lucie began to clap for him and water dripped from his gingery brown hair and beard. He ran his hand over his face (pointless, as it was only going to get soggy again) and skimmed his hand on the surface of the water to send a spray towards her, for her cheekiness. Though he liked her cheekiness. Rob snorted as she complimented his first time just because that sentence sounded amusing if you put it into another context and he turned to look at the water. "Does it?" he asked her, chuckling to himself. "I'm too old for this shit." he mumbled with a smile, showing that the statement wasn't serious. Though he was feeling slightly ridiculous at the moment. "Oh, go on. Why not? I have plenty of time to humiliate myself." he chirped and followed his lovely young friend out into the water again to once again have a go at drowning himself. "Trying to kill myself never felt so refreshing." he added, pulling up the waistband of his shorts, the water causing both his boxers and his Nike shorts to sag a little bit.
