God it felt good to be on British soil. Los Angeles was an alright place but really, it wasn't home. It was a crazy and fast-paced place, and it was pretty suffocating for someone like Rob. It was good to come home. Although for the first week and a half, Rob had spent his time in England in London. He had to visit a few studios to sit in on talk shows and then he watched the Trooping the Colour parade. Then he made a visit to Selly Oak in Birmingham were wounded soldiers came to, to see two of his friends and also to visit other soldiers and promote two wonderful characters that he supported.
Seeing his friend was heartbreaking but his mate Steve was a strong bloke, all of them were. They were the fucking heroes, the people that young adults should look up to and not celebrities. It was amazing what they did for their country, so people like you and me could sleep safely at night. There was typical banter about "being glad to be home, where it's fucking raining all the time" and being cheeky, telling his friend that once he was out of hospital and able to him and Rob were "going to hit up the local pub and get fucking legless. Oh, bollocks." as his friend had been amputated on both legs below the knees. But it was the kind of humour that kept these guys going!
After that, he went home and he saw his family. And he did all of these things with his pal, Lucie.
As he was going to Glastonbury with a number of his friends, it had interested Lucie and when he bought the tickets, he bought his American friend one too. He explained that he had some shit to do in England beforehand so she could meet him out there before the festival if she wanted, or she could come along with him. She chose the latter. He just hoped she wasn't bored, it wasn't all exciting like LA! Not where his family lived anyway, in a small town called Newton-le-Willows, situated in between Manchester and Liverpool, though he was pretty sure it was closer to Liverpool, and it was within the same county as the city. Amazingly, it was actually nice weather.
This was life to Rob, which was not the typical life of an actor. But Rob was not your average actor. He didn't grow up dreaming of the silver screen, he just sort of fell into it. But this was just a job to Robert, he woke up and went to work to make the boss happy, to tell the story. Not to be famous, to have a nice car and a ridiculously big house...that only he lived in. He didn't want to be on the list for clubs, followed by paparazzi and in all the magazines. He just wanted to work, to be honest. He liked being kept busy, he liked earning his way through life. It was a far cry from the life he used to lead. And I tell you what, he fucking missed it.
If he was a few years younger, he'd re-enlist in a heartbeat. But none of that mattered right now. In a few days he would be back to work, and this time in New York. For his first non-action role! And he was fucking nervous about that! Right now though, it was at the start of the festival. Though it officially started on Thursday, the real entertainment started on Friday and ran through until Sunday. They arrived late on Thursday evening to set up. There were several accommodation options that one could have dished out cash for due to a celebrity status which you knew a number of the A-List attendees would take up. But Rob was a) not that famous and b) not a wimp.
What was the point of coming to a festival if you weren't going to do it right? This was fucking Glastonbury. He hoped that Lucie was alright with it! A lot of girls loved the opportunity to let their hair down and be au natural for a few days. They had two tents and each one held six people, with ten of them all together. There were six lads and four girls, three girls were the girlfriends to three of the lads and then there was Lucie and the three single fellas! Two of which, Rob had jokingly promised to guard her from - as he was the third and he would share a tent compartment with her because she didn't know anyone else.
It was Friday and it was becoming evening time which meant the entertainment on the stage was due to get better: Snoop Dogg, Vampire Weekend, Dizzee Rascal and the Gorillaz would be up on the Pyramid Stage while Phoenix, La Roux and Florence and The Machine would be up on the "Other Stage". On the John Peel stage, there would be Ellie Goulding and The Black Keys. You just didn't know where to go! They had all decided to get something to eat while Rob had nipped to the car that their friend had arrived in today as not all ten came on Thursday.
He was wheeling several box-crates of alcohol that were stacked on top of each other on one of those two-wheeled trolley contraptions that was used by bar staff to transport crates. It looked pretty badass, him dragging this across the bumpy grass to their two tents that faced each other so they could all sit outside together. He had a bit of trouble, and was helped by nearby tent-occupants (he promised them a few bottles of beer as thanks), before he finally made it back to the tent. "Fuck me, that was like a work-out!" he said breathlessly, his mates happy to see the beer had arrived. Now the weekend really started!
He trudged in hisbatteredwell-worn boots (his second favourite pair), wearing jean shorts and an All Saints Spitalfields shirt, unable to wear anything else in the heat. He wore aviators to guard his eyes from the sun and you could bet he was wearing sunscreen too. Poor gingery bloke burned easy. Not that you'd be able to tell tanned skin from sunburn from freckles, let's be honest. He climbed into the "lobby" of the tent he shared with Lucie and his two friends Bobby and Mark and placed down the first of several beer boxes! "Here y'are, Luce. I got the nectar." he grinned, immediately opening up the box of Fosters to take out two tall cans and passed one to her.
It was amazing that it was cooler inside the tent then out because it provided shade. British summertime. Enjoy the sun while it lasted, next week it would probably be pissing it down.
