YOU CAN STAND UNDER MY UMBRELLA
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
It wasn't so much a scream as it was a panicked wail, a little girl calling for her father as she came flying into the house from the backyard, her arms flailing and her long and curly brown hair flying every which way. "Calm down," Joseph instructed, because when she got like this he could barely make out two words. "A worm, daddy! He's chasing me with a worm and he knows I don't like worms!" Annabelle whined, gripping onto his bracelet'd wrist and pointing across as the messy haired boy, popping his head into the room with a very pleasant little smile, his hand encased around a little worm. Not a big gross one, just a little one that was curled up on his palm. "He only wanted to talk to you." Jamie said in a tone of voice that in an adult, would have been accompanied by a roll of the eyes. "Worms can't talk, doofus!" she protested and Joey held onto her hand, giving it a little shake. "Don't call your brother a doofus." he said softly, yet sternly. "Maybe the worm-" he was interrupted. "William" Jamie said, informing him of the worm's name. "Right...maybe the worm - William - only talks to Jamie. Jamie, you know your sister doesn't like worms so stop tormenting her. Now go and put William in the garden or Majesty will eat him" he said with a playful chuckle, mostly at Jamison's horrified face at the idea of their dog eating the worm.
The family of three were going out to Santa Monica, to visit the beach and the pier with a friend of Joey's named Ella. He met her in the summer of 2008 while she did voice work and he drew a character inspired by her expressions. It was one of those moments were two people just clicked and managed to stay in touch and form a friendship. There was nothing romantic about it, he was happily married at the time and even now, when his wife had been dead a year there was nothing other than friendship. Joseph was still very much attached and loyal to the memory of his wife. It wasn't like they fell out of love and divorced, was it? They had arranged to meet Ella at the entrance of the Santa Monica Pier, because they hadn't seen each other for a while, both being so busy but now he had a new job there was a chance he'd see much more of her as she was so heavily affiliated with Disney. And also, because he wanted to take the kids out, he was trying to get out of the house on weekends rather than being sat inside, especially now the weather was beginning to brighten up. But one couldn't always just drive off to some theme park or other attraction, so sometimes you had to do something fun nearby. The pier was no big attraction, it was more like a carnival. A small ride, a ferris wheel and some stalls or booths with fun things to do.
But it would be fun enough for them! His kids loved going to the pier. He was sure that the older they got, the less exciting it became. But they liked trying to win toys and they liked going on the roller coaster that was very simple and child-friendly. And they liked Ella. Annabelle always admired the way Ella dressed and how she was so ladylike and almost like a princess in her eyes. But that would probably be because she was from England, from London no less! And anytime Annabelle thought of royalty, she thought of London where the Queen lived! Anna wanted to visit Buckingham Palace, Joey and Ellie had planned to take the kids on a vacation to England because Joseph had family there and they'd take a day trip or two to the capital city. Maybe he would still do it, when the kids were a bit older and easier to travel with. "Come on, you two." shouted Joey as he made sure the dog had water in the bowl while Anna rushed into the kitchen. "Dad, he put it in his pocket." she said with a frown. She was so unimpressed with this worm. Joey grimaced at the thought of being the one to find some dead, squished worm in his pocket when it was doing laundry and waited for the lad to come inside, trying to pretend William wasn't in his pocket. "Little man, give me the worm." he said and Jamison looked wide eyed, wondering how he knew already.
"Dude...just...no. Alright? No." he said, with a disgusted face as he took the worm outside while Jamie whined that the worm wouldn't be there when they got back. Joey washed his hand (not a fan of worms himself, if he was honest) and placed his now clean and dried hand on Jamie's shoulder. "There'll be other worms, son." he said, amused that one day he would be telling Jamie there would be other girls when he was older and telling himself that life was so much easier when worms were all he had to worry about. He finally managed to round up his youths and into the car. It wasn't a long drive to the pier from Los Angeles, but the traffic was making it drag out. Thankfully, it didn't take long to find a parking space and soon he was hand-in-hand with Anna and Jamie, making his way to the pier's entrance. "Keep an eye out for Ella." he said. Joey did love to play around with and tease Ella, he'd sometimes call her Cinderella or Cinders (which Anna liked, as Cinderella was a princess and in the film with Drew Barrymore, she was British) and other times he would break out into Rihanna's hit song Umbrella and telling her that she would stand under his "umber-ella, ella, ella, eh eh eh." but it was all good fun. His five year old son was now on his back, while Anna was stood wearing her little cross-the-body Hello Kitty bag, feeling very grown up.
