It was a beautiful spring night in LA. The water sent soothing waves crashing against the beach, the weather was mild and perfect, the wind was soft and gentle, and the sun was just beginning to sink in the sky, cascading a parade of pastel colors through the sky. Even though it was only April, that night had all the undertones of summer as if to remind everyone that it was waiting just around the corner. It was a perfect night to go to the beach, or perhaps take a walk in the Los Angeles city park, maybe even start a bonfire somewhere. Many of LA's citizens were most likely out enjoying the beautiful evening with their friends and loved ones. But not Giselle Dirby. She was sitting alone at the bar, staring into the glass she was holding.
Crazy, right? Who would want to sit at a bar on a night like this? Well that answer was evident in the lack of patrons at the bar. She could hear the pleasant laughter, the delicate chime of silverware and the gentle conversation that flowed from the adjoined restaurant. Hearing the gentle hum of content voices that filled the room made Gigi feel just a tinge of loneliness. She was still fairly new to LA so she was still trying to get adjusted. It was just so different from home. Granted, she hadn't come from a small town. But still the city of Los Angeles was a lot bigger and a lot more fast-paced then the more laidback Tampa, Florida. It wasn't like she didn't love it though because she did. It was just hard. Hard starting over in a brand new city, hard moving from the place you'd always called home, hard meeting new people and adjusting to a new life.
What was probably the most devastating part of it all, though, was the lack of work. Gigi was really beginning to understand the concept of "the struggling artist". In a city of so many starlets and seasoned actors and actresses, no one needed Giselle Dirby for the part. Sure she'd landed a few roles here and there, but none that required more than a few lines at best. In fact, the best role she had landed so far had her speaking three lines. Well really it was two and a half, but that still wasn't so bad was it? Gigi sighed, drank the rest of her vodka and put her head in her hands. She couldn't get down on herself too much. Hey, she'd only been in LA for a few months and she was lucky she was getting any roles at all, however minor they may be. She knew it was true, but no matter how much she told herself this, it never made her feel any better.
"Another Goose?" she heard the bartender say. Without looking up, Gigi shook her head. "No, rum and coke please," she murmured. The bartender nodded and walked away. Gigi picked up her head and ran her fingers through her light colored hair. When the bartender returned with her drink, she smiled and quietly thanked him. The young woman turned her attention to one of the TV screens hovering over the bar. A commercial was playing for some new dramatic thriller that had just come out. The plot revolved around the people of a small village who have fallen under a dark curse and find themselves dying a new and painful death every day. The plot sounded dumb to her, but Gigi still couldn't help but to feel a tinge of jealousy as she watched the faces of the big name actors light up the screen. "That should be me," she said to herself. "I should be up on that screen." Giselle sighed heavily and took a big gulp of her drink.
