fill my dreams with flakes of snow
With Spring Fashion Exclusive just under a month away, Taiko couldn’t afford to be as lazy as usual. He was assisting with the production of a handful of fashion shows and people were depending on him. Today alone, he’d nearly been fired three times by three different people. He was over an hour late to a fitting with a client because he’d pressed the snooze button six times too many. The client was looking for a gown for the Grammy's next month and wanted something custom designed for her. In other words, she was being a pain in Taiko’s ass. Once he had the measurements, he was supposed to meet with the Director of Events to get details on his responsibilities for Fashion Exclusive. This opportunity was a big deal because it was sure to be the foot in the door to get him noticed for next year. His line wasn’t ready to be displayed publicly yet, and even if it was, he’d still have to market it before it’d be ready for Fashion Exclusive. His goal was to make as many contacts as he could and use them for his benefit.
But at this moment, Taiko was lucky that they were even keeping him. He had a bit of time between his appointment and the meeting so he stopped to smoke a blunt. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t a little nervous, but he never really needed an excuse to get high. The high led him on a detour to a White Castle where he gobbled down a bunch of food that he shouldn’t have. He made it to the meeting, fifteen minutes late; strike one. Strike two came when the Assistant Director of Events noticed that he was still a little baked. He gave Taiko a warning and told him that if he screwed up again, he’d be gone. Taiko hated being chastised like he was a child. He was twenty-five years old and didn’t follow any rules. But this was one rule he knew he’d have to follow if he wanted to have a secure future in the industry. By the time Taiko got home he was beyond tired and ended up falling asleep on the couch.
At around nine-thirty, Taiko woke up to his growling stomach. He stuffed his face with some sushi and decided that he wanted to go out and forget about this draining day. He sauntered out of the kitchen, barefoot, into his immaculately tidy bedroom and threw together an outfit. Once the pieces were placed on the bed, he gave them his seal of approval before hopping into the shower. It was still weird, having to use the big shower all by himself and not seeing the extra toiletries in the bathroom. Being in there reminded him of his late girlfriend more than anywhere else in the house. Though they’d only been living together for a few months before she passed, Taiko had gotten so used to seeing her toothbrush next to his and her towel hanging beside his own. Now the space seemed bigger and emptier than usual. Quickly, he exited the bathroom and dressed, willing to rid himself of the sad memories. Before leaving his room, Taiko grabbed a crystal vial and his cell phone. Taiko put his phone down on the coffee table and emptied a bit of the vial’s contents onto the small rectangular mirror that was on the table. Inside his pocket was thick black straw. He separated the white powder into two small lines with his credit card before inhaling it all like a professional. He wiped the excess cocaine off the mirror with his index finger and placed it in his mouth before putting the vial, straw, and credit card back into his pocket.
During the cab ride, Taiko’s high started to set in. He was feeling extra energized and was ready to get the night started. There was a line at Empire, his usual spot, but he skipped it and went straight to the front where he was greeted by name and let in without a problem. Mommy and Daddy’s money coupled with his frequent visits gave Taiko special privileges in tons of bars and clubs all over the city. Taiko went right up to VIP, telling a handful of random guys and girls to follow, where two bottles of top-shelf vodka appeared shortly after. The bass music pounding in his chest as he checked out the strangers he’d gathered; they’d do for now.
