2012 had been another successful year for Cody Reyes in the industry. With five movie releases, there wasn't much to complain about. Approximately thirty productions had built his resume to what it was today. Who would have thought he'd accumulate so much success in a matter of ten years? Truly, he was extremely blessed. He'd been comfortably busy from the get-go, so time to relax often came as a shock to the young man. December twenty-first, four days before Christmas, was one of those free days. The next week and a half were bound to be full of family, so he opted out of driving to his parent's house. Instead, Cody decided to consult his iPhone's contact list. His thumb wasn't scrolling long before he found a proper candidate: Miranda Bell. Many of Cody's friends had been forgotten about through his constant travels and work. Miranda Bell was one of them. Guilty, he decided to give her a call.
After the first ring sounded, Cody realized he hadn't a clue if Miranda was even in Los Angeles. Actors and actresses could be in Los Angeles one day and Europe the very next morning. He knew from personal experience, so the entire call suddenly felt foolish. He heavily weighed the chance she wouldn't pick up. Leaving a message was less embarrassing than speaking through a completely understanding. The phone had now tolled three times. His chances of escaping were promising. Then, another voice was on the line. At first, Cody believed he was speaking to the answering machine. He wasn't. "Oh, hey, Miranda," Cody greeted, delayed. Better late than never. "It's Cody." It turned out she was in Los Angeles, after all.
Their conversation over the phone was mostly polite and to the point. He invited her out to The Vineyard to catch up, and much to his surprise, she agreed to meet him. His tendency to fall out with his friends wasn't always forgiven on the spot. Cody could name an entire list of tart-lipped critics. Even his grandmother had a bittersweet impression of him. Apologies were null after missing someone's seventy-fifth birthday. There was no excuse to pardon what he'd done. One of his prominent New Year's resolutions was keeping in better touch with those he cared about. A head start couldn't hurt. Cody had a lot of ground to cover.
Jeans, leather boots, a leather jacket, and a maroon scarf was his outfit of choice. He ran a hand through his hair and threw on a pair of sunglasses. The midday sun in California tended to be blinding through the windshield of his Audi R4. The drive was almost calming. He sorted through a jumble of thoughts. Some concerned work. Others surrounded his personal life. The lines were mostly blurred these days, so he revised his New Year's resolution: draw a clearer line between relationships and work. Unfortunately, his goals were often easier said than done. How many times had he attempted to segregate the two aspects in his life before? At this point, he was beginning to wonder if it was even possible.
He pulled into the parking lot and pulled into a space promptly after twelve. Cody wasn't one to be late to his appointments. Punctuality backed up the professionalism that many executives appreciated in him. Miranda wasn't present yet; he had just enough time to put his name in for a table. The Vineyard was busier than he anticipated, but the hostess managed to snag him a spot before Miranda showed up. Water was poured, bread delivered. Cody's eyes scanned the parking lot for incoming cars. Once he spotted Miranda, he waved her over. "It's so good to see you," he greeted, standing up. Cody wrapped her in a warm embrace. "I'm glad you were able to make it out," he added. "How've you been?"
