Seconds later loud wailing drifted down the staircase. Meech shook his head and closed the door behind him. He dropped his duffle to the floor then shrugged off his jacket and tossed it to the floor beside the bag. Softer footsteps padded into the foyer and Dimitri turned and raised an eyebrow. “Stop feeding my cat crack when I’m gone.” The response he received was a soft huff and a light roll of the eyes. “Don’t act like I don’t know what you’re up to.” Another huffing snort. They both knew Lily didn’t need crack to stimulate her. Like the rest of her breed, the young Abyssinian was a raging ball of energy, always bouncing off walls and getting into mischief. Anyone who was meeting the cat for the first time would think she really was doped up on crack. But that was just her nature. Abyssinians were naturally playful and extremely active animals, which was one of the deciding factors in Meech’s breed selection.
“How you doin’ pretty girl?” Dimitri asked his companion as he stooped down and scooped her up onto his shoulder. The capuchin monkey perched comfortably on his shoulder blade, letting her long tail hang down his back, and gently nibbled his ear affectionately. Meech walked into the kitchen. Dishes were still piled in the sink, but the counter was cleaned of the small mess he’d left behind that morning. Evidently Roxanne, as his monkey was named, had done a little bit of tidying up for him. As he passed the chairs stationed at the island, Roxie gingerly leaped from his shoulder to a chair then climbed down to the floor and began grooming her fur. Dimitri opened the loaf of bread that was sitting on the counter then reached inside one of the high cabinets for the peanut butter. PB&Js were one of the very few meals he could prepare correctly without any problems. Anything else was often either burned, undercooked, or a combination of both. As he began to spread peanut butter on one of the bread slices, heavy footsteps pounded down the stairs announcing Lily’s arrival. The cat raced into the kitchen excitedly and bounded straight for Roxie. The monkey clicked her tongue loudly and swiftly clambered up Dimitri’s long body, stopping to sit on his head.
“Hey!” he said in his low voice. From her perch, Roxanne looked down at Lilian, bared her teeth at the cat, then leaped down to the floor and jumped on Lily’s back. Lily was instantly jetting off again with Roxanne still on her back, riding her as if she were a horse. Footsteps sounded loudly on the floors as the two animals dashed wildly all over the house after each other. Dimitri went on about his business as if it were nothing. Their behavior was nothing unusual and it was something he dealt with on a daily basis. Both animals were highly energetic and enjoyed playing with one another. The two developed a strong bond over the years and they were good company for each other especially when Dimitri had to be away from the house. When he was finished making his sandwich, he tossed the sticky knife into the sink among the other dishes. Then, still leaving out the jelly and peanut butter and a small sticky mess on the counter, he walked into the living area and plopped down on the sofa. Meech grabbed for the remote and flicked on the flat screen TV. ESPN instantly came on the screen showing the highlights of last night’s football game.
Within minutes Lilian and Roxanne were making their way back into the room, temporarily spent from their adventures. Lily clambered up onto the cat tree sitting in the corner and started swatting at the toy Dimitri had hung from the highest platform. Roxie climbed up onto the couch beside her owner and settled in beside him to watch TV and share his sandwich. It was just another typical day in the life of Dimitri Evans.
