So not many of you know me but I am Jess and I have been roleplaying for awhile now. But more importantly I am part of the film industry. You guys have a good surface idea of what it is like in the industry but I think the site will be even better if you added the realism of the industry into the site.
So here is my list of things that you guys should really consider. After writing this post up I figured I would break up the suggestions so its one topic per board.
Crew members - now I know that being an outsider to this small world we think that the actors and actress aka the "Talent" as film makers call them are the ones that make a movie a success or not. But in reality its not. The crew (all behind the scenes people) are the ones that make it work. The crew on movie sets are generally on big budget films have about 4x times more crew members than the talented cast. Also there are key roles that are needed before cast is decided on and that is generally the top positions which are PRODUCER, DIRECTOR, CINEMATOGRAPHY OR DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY (DP FOR SHORT) AND FINALLY THE 1ST AD. These are all positions filled before any casting is done. So since the site is over run by actors and actresses I suggest that you make a rule like your boy and girl rule saying after two talent or acting characters you should create a crew member. Now below is a list of all the different type of crew positions available that are also really big. So if you guys need reference or help with positions I would suggest the following for job titles for characters with a brief description of each job title
2. Writer aka Screen Writer - This is a necessity also. Without a script there is no movie or tv show and yes even the so called "Reality" shows are scripted I know shocker but it is. I have held and read a few reality show scripts. So since this is a big part of the industry we should try to fill in some characters that do this. A lot of the times the screen writer will be on set and sometimes help out keeping the actors and actresses stick to the script. On big budget films someone else would be hired to keep the actors to stick to the script which would be the Script Supervisor.
3. Director - This as many people think is the best job and the most successful but it isn't. All the director really does is guide the actors and actresses to perform their best and the director comes up with the vision of the movie. So the director is just a big boss type of figure that gets to socialize and say yes or no on everything on the movie but the producer is in charge of the director and can veto the directors say.
4. Cinematographers aka Director of Photography (DP) - These are generally the more geeky tech people. Many DPs work with the same directors and actors and actresses. An actress can request a certain DP to work on the same project as them because its the DPs job to light and create the mood of the scene. So if a DP makes someone ugly by accident I am sure they are not dps anymore. A lot of times the director gets to pick the DP so you will see a lot of the DP and Director teams the same.
5. Art Director - The art director is a major role behind the camera. They are in charge of the sets, wardrobe, make up, landscaping, locations, basically everything you see in a movie is because of the art director. the art director is the head of the art department which are broken up to many subgroups. But the art department create sets, they design the wardrobe, come up with the make up and hair styles, they find props, locations. Movies would not be the same without this bunch.
6. Post Production Jobs - there are many post jobs. Like the FILM EDITOR. They are the biggest job though. The film editor puts the movie together and in reality can make or break an actor or anyone's career by how they edit the movie. Most of the A list actors got to the top because of the film editors. But there are other jobs too besides the film editor. there are the special effects and color technicians (not making it up) and so many other little jobs.
7. Personal Assistants - This is the biggest workforce in the industry. There are more personal assistants than anything else. A lot of people who want to do management or producing usually start in this job. This is a fast way to network and to meet the big names.
[/ul]
I just listed the big well known jobs but if you guys want me to write up a complete job list then just let me know and I will do that for you. [/size]
