nothing will ever mean as much as you do to me, sweetheart

This was when Hector was supposed to make a big decision in his life. He had gotten an offer to take over a company in Germany. It was a huge opportunity but it meant leaving almost all of his life behind him. He wasn’t ever going to be able to just take a weekend and go to New York like he could now. It was going to take much too long. He knew there was so much that he would give up if he went, but he also knew that he was going to be passing up a huge opportunity that would make his directing and producing career sky high. He was never going to get an opportunity like this. Ever. It was never going to happen. There was just no way. He was going to have to make a decision and he only had a week left to make it before they offered the position to another guy. He had called a lot of people about this company and the name was huge and it was going to do nothing but good for him, but there was something that was holding him back. He couldn’t just say yes. He sat in the airport, legs propped up on another chair, phone in his hand pressed to his ear. He was at a loss. He didn’t know what to do anymore. He was supposed to be going back to LA today and spend the rest of the week deciding what he was going to do about it all. He had gotten the call while he was visiting Regan in New York. Regan. That was a whole different subject for him. He knew that he felt something for her, but he liked to think that it was just the way he was with girls. He tended to fall quick and it had always been a weakness for him. Regan had always been a weakness for him. There was something about her that wouldn’t ever let him forget about her for long. He used to think it was her undying innocent and naivety, but even now when she’s gone through quite a big change he finds himself thinking of her more than not. But they were just friends, best friends, but friends nonetheless. There was nothing more and he was pretty sure she had something more with another guy anyway. He could hear the voice of his father on the other line of her phone. He was one of two of his actual friends and family that knew about this offer he had gotten. The other being Regan. “I know your flight is soon, but just think long and hard about your decision, Hector. It’s your choice, but you’d better have a damn good reason for not going if you don’t take this offer. This could make your life. Love you.” Hector mumbled a farewell and pressed the end button on his phone. There was one sentence that he kept hearing. He couldn’t unhear it. He couldn’t stop thinking about it. He heard his father’s voice repeating “You’d better have a damn good reason for not going”. He closed his eyes and thought long and hard about that sentence. Did he have a reason for not leaving? He probably didn’t. No, he wasn’t dating anyone. He wasn’t tied to a project. He had some friends, a best friend or two, but he didn’t see them all the time anyway. There wasn’t a single thing here that he couldn’t have there too. It was just going to be tough rebuilding his life like he knew he would have to, but people did it all the time. He wasn’t the only one. He rubbed his eyes with the palms of his hands and dropped his phone on the chair beside him. He moved his hands to the arms of the chair and he looked down, pressing the home button on his phone to see the time. Instead all he saw was the background of him and his best friend. There she was again. Regan, laughing with her big mouth laugh that she got when he really got her going. He chuckled a little bit, imagining how many times he’s heard that laugh. How many inappropriate times that laugh came out. How many parties had they been to when they should have been quiet and regal and he made a small joke and she just couldn’t contain herself? How many pictures were ruined by her laughing during them? Well, she would say ruined. He, on the other hand, would say they were perfectly fine and that had been what the home screen of his phone was, a “ruined” picture of the two of them. He didn’t think he could ever find a better one. There was no way that there was a more realistic picture of them out there. This one was perfect. Her short hair being ruffled by his monstrous hand, her nose wrinkled up in laughter, and her head attempting to be thrown back with a hearty laugh. It was right then that he realized what it was. A reason. That was all he needed to stay. He needed a reason. She was his reason. She was everything he had never known he’d needed. She’d always been there for him and he would always be there for her. Wasn’t that what love was? Wasn’t that everything that you could ever want from life? There wasn’t anything more important than that. He stood up, grabbing his carry on and rushing out of the airport. He didn’t care about his bag. He would just have someone pick it up in LA. This was much too important right now. He was trying to rush through people as he heard his flight being called. He wasn’t rushing to it, though, he was rushing away. He needed to get back to that little cozy apartment and that beautiful girl and that little furball that he hated to admit he loved. He found a cab quickly and gave him her address. He needed to get there fast. A short cab ride later and there he was, back outside the doorstep that he had only shown up on a short few days ago. He knocked hard on the door and waited for her to answer. He wasted no time in blurting out words that probably didn’t make sense to her. “I love you. I don't want to leave for Germany. Be my reason to stay.” |
