Then with one leg held neutrally, he applied pressure with the outside leg to urge the horse to turn right. After more than ten years of riding the technique came naturally to him now and he could communicate with his horses through verbal and leg commands alone. Sometimes he chose to ride without a bridle, but today he’d opted for the extra aid. The man glanced over his shoulder at his friend and smirked. “What’s the matter Ed?” he called. “Getting too old for this?” Even though Dallas had a good eight years on the man, he still liked to tease Edward about his advancing age. After all Dallas himself had a young spirit. He still smoked, drank and lived like he was twenty five. For him age was nothing but a number and he wasn’t about to let his life be governed by it just because kids these days thought forty-two was “old”. He was more lively and daring than most of them anyway. Dragontown Ranch, which was named for the Alice Cooper song of the same name, was his retreat from the world. As a man who valued his privacy and hated excessive attention from the media, every once in a while Dallas needed to withdraw to his own private sanctuary where he could relax and do as he pleased. Located in the Flint Hills of Kansas, Dragontown offered plenty of privacy and solace from the hustle and bustle of life as a celebrity. Not only that, but it was also a nice change from the fast-paced life of the city. It wasn’t that he wasn’t used to city life. He’d been born and raised in Buffalo, New York and over the years his fair share of traveling led him through various renowned cities all over the world. Eventually he was led back to New York where he now lived in the Big Apple. Owning a ranch with wide open land and a stable full of horses had always been something he’d longed for since he’d been an adolescent and it was his haven. Secluded enough that it had plenty of pasture and couldn’t easily be located. After all it was in the middle of the Flint Hills. For the past couple weeks Dallas had been vacationing at his private resort. Days had gone by riding and training his horses, sleeping in, enjoying the fresh Kansas air and of course getting doped up on whatever he had available. This was a good period for him so it was mostly marijuana and hallucinogenics. Not the hard hitting stuff like cocaine. Not yet. Soon Dallas would have to leave his horse ranch and immerse himself back into the real world for filming, promotional business and the like. His last days on the ranch were always bittersweet, but they always left him refreshed and rejuvenated. He’d invited one of his closer friends Edward out to Kansas to hang out with him. Like Dallas, horseback riding was one of Edward’s passions and they’d often spend time at the ranch. Even when Dallas wasn’t around Edward was always welcome to stay at Dragontown whenever he needed an escape from his problems. The house itself had three guest bedrooms (at the insistence of the contractor; originally Dallas only wanted one bedroom to discourage visitors) so there was enough room for Edward. Hooves crashed heavily over the earth as Dallas signaled for Jagger to pick up speed. Suddenly there was another set of hooves pounding in his ear close by, and before he knew it Edward was speeding past him on his horse.
