With inflation a pack of cigarettes didn’t cost as much as it used to. That and the fact that the things were a major health hazard led Dallas to use them sparingly. So with a small snort he shook his head to discredit Mikaela’s suggestion. “Not worth the trouble. Do you know how bad those things are for your lungs? I could get cancer or lung disease,” he reasoned. His reasoning was rather hypocritical, and considering the habits that he indulged in regularly Dallas had a lot more to worry about then lung disease. Kidney failure, for instance, or respiratory collapse. Did he care? Not at all. There were certain measures he took to keep his health in line, but just like everyone else Dallas thought he was invincible, an approach to life that would be sure to bite him in the ass sooner or later. For someone who was so insensitive to the rest of the world, Dallas felt strangely accomplished that he was able to offer Mikaela a helping hand through the obstacles she faced. Maybe it was because he could see that she was a fighter and not someone who laid down on the tracks and let life run her over. Whatever the reason it was a good change from bringing someone’s world crashing around their shoulders. Almost. Mikaela’s question was certainly disarming. No one had ever really taken the time to inquire about his own wants and needs. No one seemed to care except for maybe a few close friends but those were few and far between. But maybe they had a reason not to care. Dallas starred in blockbuster movies, was capable of flying across the world at a whim’s notice, and he was basically a household name. From the perspective of the media and damned near everybody else, someone of his stature had no right to be unsatisfied. So Dallas was appreciative of Mikaela’s interest, but at the same time it brought his mind back to a place he often tried to avoid. “Anywhere but where I am,” he said finally. “The road I’m on is dry and cracked. It’s missing the light.” A thin layer of glaze settled over his dark eyes as his mind abandoned his body, drifting somewhere far away. “Without it I’m bound to hit a dead end sooner or later.” You could have everything in the world you ever wanted, but without love it would all be worthless. This was the everyday story of Dallas’ life.
