His younger sister Christina was born seven years after him, making them a family of four. His mother is an Italian-American, who now owns a café in Jenkintown, and his father is an Irish-American, is a retired lawyer. He had enjoyed acting since his school days, he was a student at the private school where he was both an avid sportsman and also a very keen member of the drama club. He played on basketball team until graduating. Tom wanted to keep on acting and at first thought about being a stage actor. However he was unsure about what he wanted to do with his future and studied English in college.He attended Villanova University for his freshman year before he transferred to Georgetown University and graduated with a B.A. in English.

He had plans to travel abroad, which he did after studying at the Actors Studio Drama School at New School University in New York. In NYC, he started working as a kitchen assistant while trying to get his acting career off the ground. He proved to be a hard-working aspiring actor throughout the late 90's. Thomas began his television career in 1999 and made his film debut in 2001. In 2001, he also became well-known for his role in the television show Alias as Will Tippin. He departed the show in 2003, though he made two guest appearances until 2006. He became engaged to his then-girlfriend and fellow actress Melissa Cipriani in early 2004 and they married in the spring of 2005. And they were divorced by the fall of 2006 but remain good friends. They got married because it felt like the right thing to do at the time but turned out to be the wrong thing, neither of them were ready for something so serious and responsible.

After starring in Wedding Crashers and Failure to Launch, Tom acted in six episodes of Nip/Tuck before starring in 2007's Yes Man with Jim Carrey. He starred as the main character in the short-lived comedy series Kitchen Confidential and has since gone on to star in films including He's Just Not That into You; New York, I Love You; Valentine's Day and The A-Team. Thomas is currently based in New York but for work, he travels wherever he's told to be. Which he enjoys, he loves being able to trek across the country (or countries) as part of his job. The beauty of being a single man is having all that freedom. Which is selfish of him and he knows that. Does he regret not settling down with that all important wife and kids?
