quirks. temperance has a very thick new york accent, to the point that she sometimes becomes unintelligible. though her agency has attempted to correct this through the use of dialect coaches, temperance has rebuffed them every time; she refuses to compromise her heritage and relies on her skill and notoriety to retain her job, despite this stubbornness.
temperance has attended many sessions of anger management and keeps a rubber band around her right wrist at all times, generally hidden beneath the sleeve of her blazer. whenever she becomes so angry or frustrated with something (or someone), she'll begin to habitually snap the rubber band against her skin, all the while mentally coaxing herself down.
making friends with temperance is often seen as an exercise in futility, though she is not unnecessarily rude and will humor (and to a limited extent, tolerate) genuinely kind and receptive people. when a prospective friend is presented, she will conduct a thorough "screening process" that determines whether or not she'll accept them, as if she's operating her own interior clique. so far, only three people have passed this test, but none are aware such a thing was ever conducted.
aspirations. temperance's goals are similar to those of heidi fleiss, though different in execution. she wants to become legendary as a talent agent; the go-to gal for all up-and-coming stars. she has no desire to be an actress herself, finding the life vapid and typically short-lived.
becoming the ceo of the american talent association is a long-held goal of hers, as she believes the late david payd would want her to fill his shoes when she is sufficiently skilled. she considers his replacement a stand-in only; someone who is keeping the chair warm for her.
though she would never admit it, temperance fosters some regret over the strained relationship she has with her parents. though she is certain they don't share her feelings, she would like to make amends and be more than just the daughter they never speak of. she knows they'd never take the first steps, so she occasionally gears herself up for making that one all-important phone call. she has yet to actually succeed.
secrets. temperance wants nothing more than to be taken seriously as an agent, and has built that upon a no-nonsense platform of stoicism and verbal hostility. she sees tattoos as rebellious and childish, so she adamantly hides the fact that she has one on her left foot; a memento of her misspent youth. temperance is also quite conservative when it comes to intimate relationships, so much so that she would rather watch other people engage in the act than participate herself. because of this, temperance is something of a voyeur, though she does so legally at clubs designed for such activities.
personality evaluated. temperance is brash, loud, and confrontational. having grown up on the mean streets of new york, she's cultivated a tough, no-nonsense attitude that has worked wonders for keeping her safe and keeping friends at arm's length. speaking of friends, temperance has few, preferring the satisfaction of a successful career and a hard day's work. her family is much the same way, though similar personalities conflict, and save for important holidays, temperance rarely visits.
temperance is neither depressed nor misanthropic, however; she enjoys the freedom of a select group of associates and uses her vacuous free time to dive head first into her work. to say that she is married to her job is an understatement, because she rarely does anything else. she will literally tend to every need and request of a client provided she believes they'll become sufficiently famous enough to advance her own interests. the minute they become more hassle then they are worth, temperance will cut ties and find another prospective actor to elevate into stardom.
though physically quite stunning, temperance finds little value in physical appearance. she will pretty herself up and play the part, but isn't shy about expressing her distaste over the pointlessness of being uncomfortable and scantily clad just to advance yourself in the eyes of the elite. once free of whatever gala she was attending, she'll typically take excruciatingly hot showers (in order to wash off both the make-up and the filth of her superiors) and lay around looking as disheveled as possible.

history evaluated. temperance anne marshall was born in queens, new york to a neglectful father and a workaholic mother. she was raised primarily by babysitters and the occasional visiting relative, so she grew up seeing her parents not as parents, but as transient house guests. her family valued hard work and dedication, and expected the best even out of an infant. temperance had neighborhood jobs before she was ten years old, and helped pay the bills with a full time job before she entered high school.
by the time of her graduation, temperance had been cultivated into a workhorse with little regard for niceties and zero empathy. though she was proud of these values, she nonetheless held a fair amount of resentment towards her parents for driving her so hard. so on the morning of her eighteenth birthday, she amassed a small fortune of saved money from nearly fifteen years of work and moved to california with no idea of what she would do with her life.
at first, temperance was a waitress, though her looks caught the attention of more than one hollywood producer seeking to capitalize on her appearance. she declined each one, however, believing the entertainment business to be full of brainless, talentless assholes that are corralled into a pointless career because they can't contribute anything meaningful to society. she told this to a half-dozen producers as well, as many big-wigs gave patronage to the diner where she worked. at first, it was known for its delicious key lime pie, but it had later become famous for one lippy waitress who wasn't afraid of speaking her mind.
word had already spread that temperance wasn't interested in becoming an actress, so she was instead offered a job at the american talent association, a widely-respected media personality venue. the man who offered her the position was david payd, an elderly man who found temperance's sincerity endearing. she was hired on the spot with the stipulation that she wasn't ever allowed to pull her punches. grateful, she agreed, and served as payd's receptionist for three years.
payd later passed away due to medical complications. his replacement was a former actor himself: jack marks. having been told much about payd's receptionist, he decided to promote her on a trial basis as a talent scout. temperance excelled for the trial year period and became a full-fledged talent agent. since then, she has elevated the careers and crushed the dreams of more than one hundred hopeful actors, becoming well-known not as the best talent agent, but as the most aggressive.
whereas before temperance had to work her charms on individuals, now she's finding that her reputation precedes her, garnering both respect and loathing from many different sources. temperance, however, is heedless to the talk, calling it "tabloid bullshit" and dismissing it immediately. her only concern is advancing her own career, and to do that, she has to meet - and defeat - many more clients.

roleplay sample.Temperance Marshall stepped out of the elevator onto the third floor of the ATA, or the American Talent Association. Double-mocha cappuccino in one hand and a swollen briefcase in the other, she marched deliberately towards the office of her boss, Mr. Marks.
A stern man, Marks was much like Temperance in that he saw little reason in the acting profession outside of making money and networking. That wasn't to say they got along - Temperance got along with very few people. He was stubborn, biased, bombastic, and unlike his subordinate who had just barged in without so much as a knock, he didn't know when to shut up.
"I dumped Polaski," she declared. "He was a dead-end. I need someone new."
Marks didn't look surprised, though he was clearly frustrated. This was the fifth client Temperance had dumped this year, and it was only two months into the third quarter. She was an outstanding talent agent who was incapable of tolerating a poor performance, and that fault was beginning to make him change his mind about his preconceived notion of an "outstanding" talent agent.
"What did he do? Did he slur one of the lines at the commercial?"
"I wouldn't drop him for something so petty," she snapped back, having little regard for Marks's position of superiority. "First of all, he's a commercial actor. That's even below reoccurring soap opera actor. You should be ashamed at yourself for wasting my time with him."
"I apologize," he deadpanned, clearly being sarcastic.
"Second, he slurred all of his lines. Get that? He's not even a good commercial actor. How can you suck at sucking?"
"Uh-huh," Marks sighed and leaned back in his chair, looking up at Temperance with a stern glare that stifled whatever further bulletins she had on the subject. He drummed his fingers on his desk before sitting up and thumbing towards the door. "So...what? You want a sitcom star? Reality T.V.?"
"Don't insult me Jack. We get new meat every damn day. One of them has to have caught your eye."
"A few did. I gave one of them to Newman."
"...Newman."
"BUT," he interrupted, not wanting to drag out that trope any longer than necessary. "I got another. A new kid. I hear he used to do adult entertainment before abstaining, if you catch my drift."
"A porn star?" Temperance said with a scoff. "A porn star caught your eye? What are his roles? Romeo Bangs Juliet? The Taming of her Shrew?"
"Funny, and no. He caught my eye because he seemed genuine about not wanting to flush his burgeoning career down the shitter."
"He's on the ball."
"Look, you want him or not? 'Cause if not, I'll give him to Davis. I'm sure he's eager to get a few more celebrities on Hollywood Squares."
"I'll take him," she groaned, figuring this was the best opportunity she'd get. God help her. "What's his address?"
