ONE THING THAT MAKES IT ALL COMPLETE
Being away from home was nothing he couldn't handle. Since attending boarding school was a youth to joining the army throughout his young adulthood, Rob had always been away to the point that it felt odd to be in the presence of his family and civilian friends for longer than a few months. He was so used to corresponding through letters and phone calls, seeing them during his time off or whenever he could drive home if he was based in England doing training. He half-expected to be constantly seeing his family when he left the army, funny how things turned out. Since it was his niece's birthday not too long ago, Rob suggested that his young half-sister Jenny and her boyfriend Nick take a holiday to see him, bring his toddler niece Lizzie and go to Disneyland while they were here. Jenny was excited, she'd never been to the US before and was pleased that of all the places they were going, it was Los Angeles. Hollywood, the beautiful beaches, the elite stores. Rob was making jokes for the past couple of days that she was more excited to come and see Rodeo Drive then she was to come and see her big brother! When the trio arrived, he couldn't believe how much Elizabeth had grown since he last saw her. He saw pictures, she had been on webcam when Rob and Jenny were chatting online but he never noticed it until she was in his arms and giving him a big hug, because Lizzie loved her uncle "Wobbie" as she called him.
Rob was such a softie. He turned into a big gooey mess around kids, especially when they were really young. He definitely wanted kids some day, even if it was just one. He was absolutely besotted with this young madam. She was the only baby in his immediate family, so he spoilt her rotten whenever he saw her. He was her uncle and godfather, after all. During the course of the morning, Rob had convinced Jenny and Nick to go and explore, because he knew she wanted to. She wanted to see the Hollywood Sign and the Walk of Fame, she was itching to go out with her camera and he didn't mind, he knew that she wouldn't come here again unless it was to see him, so why not be a tourist? To make it easier, he suggested he look after Lizzie for the afternoon, to give the couple some space and so they didn't have to deal with a potentially cranky baby girl when out. Or maybe just because he wanted gobble that child all up, she was too cute with her big blue eyes and her wispy, curled blonde hair.
It was nice and warm out today, so the child was in a tee shirt and some shorts with little sandals and a hat that covered her neck too, she was coated in sun cream and was being carried down the street by Rob, the proud uncle. "Oh you're a big girl now, ain't ya?" he said, adjusting her as she sat against his ribcage with her legs around his upper torso, holding onto him around his neck. She'd always been a big baby because she had a huge father, but it was a lot more tiring to carry her around than he remembered! There were plenty of people in the park today, some with dogs and others with their kids. Some youths were just out with their friends, enjoying the weather and the fact that it was a Saturday and they had no school. There were young and old couples occupying benches or just spots on the grass. On the grass was Rob and little Liz. The sound of a child's squeal of joy and laughter, was one of the best sounds in the world. It was infectious, you couldn't help but crack a smile too. The seemingly miserable sod that was Rob had this near-unrecognisable permanent grin on his face. They were playing a game of Rob hiding behind his hands and she was daringly creeping towards him but then his hands would spring away and he'd come towards her and she's run around squealing in delight, giggling away when he caught her and tickled her.
He plonked himself down on the green grass and she stood behind him with her hands on his shoulders. "Wobbie, rumby tumby." she said, crawling around him and began to reach down to the floor then stand back up again, imitating the exercise scene in Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree. She knew the moves and the tune, she would sing the words as she knew them - which was in baby speak. "When I up, down, touch the ground, it puts me in the mood...up, down, touch the ground, in the mood... for food." Rather than singing it, he spoke it in the tune of song. She then lifted up her tee shirt, like Winnie did to reveal the rumble in his tummy. But after a few seconds, she exclaimed something, to the amusement of Rob. "Boobies!" the toddler said...except she wore a onesie so she wasn't flashing any 'boobies' but she had seriously tickled Rob, who was uncontrollably tittering to himself. He wriggled his fingers on her little potbelly and then he picked her up, gently fell down onto his back and lifted the kid into the air, resting her legs up on his bent legs. She let out a shrill squeal. "You're a daft little bugger. We'll have none of that when you're older." he said, though she couldn't understand him. When she actually had boobies, we certainly would be having none of that! "Are you like a birdie, what do birdie's say?" he asked and she began to make noises like "cheep cheep".
